If your Volvo key fob has begun to function intermittently, that's a good sign that the battery is dying and will need to be replaced soon.
You can replace the Volvo key fob batteries by following a few easy steps. First, find a clean work area to carry out the process. Set out all the tools that you will need. Find the battery hatch, and ensure that it is set to "open." Make use of a flathead screwdriver or coin or another similar tool to turn the hatch to open. Then, carefully remove the battery out of its socket by lifting it on the side that is closest to the key-ring loop. Be sure to use rubber gloves to protect the clips or electronic contact surfaces.
After the battery has been removed, put the new one into its socket. Make sure that the positive end of the battery is facing upwards and that all clips are in place. Slide the cover toward the key-ring section until it becomes loose, and is able to slide off. Uncover the cover and reveal the hidden mechanical key blade. This is a way to unlock your vehicle by the driver's side doors if the key fob battery is dead or gone.

Utilize a flathead, coin, or any other similar tool to flip open the battery hatch. Be careful not to touch the electronic contact surfaces of the fob with your tools, as this may cause the key fob to stop functioning.
Once the hatch is open you can slide the battery into its socket, making sure it is properly seated with the positive (+) side facing upwards. Once the clips have been locked into place, replace the cover of the battery and then reassemble the fob.
By pressing the unlock button, you will deactivate the alarm and unlock the driver's side door. Pressing it again will unlock all doors and the tailgate. The unlock button can also be used to roll down the windows during an extremely hot day or to let fresh air in before stepping out on the road. If you want more than that, the keyfob can be used to activate the ERS which will start the climate control system of your vehicle. It will warm or cool the vehicle to the desired temperature levels while the vehicle is parked.
How to Replace the Battery
If your key fob isn't locking or unlocking your vehicle like it did in the past it could be time to replace the battery. The battery can be replaced using a flathead screwdriver pry bar made of plastic, or other small tools. Locate the small slot that is used to house the backup or emergency key for ignition made of metal. Inject the blade of a screwdriver or pry bar tool into this slot and gently open the back of the fob of the key. After you have opened the fob, locate and remove the CR 2032 3V battery. Put a brand new battery in its place, and put the fob back together.
Note: Some older Volvo models use a different type of battery that is the CR2025. CR2025 batteries have the thickness of 7/10ths millimeters less than a CR2032, so you'll need to be very careful when replacing your battery.

The key fob you have in your possession has the transponder chip programmed to your Volvo. When you insert the key fob into the ignition barrel the transponder chip scans the code and compares it to the one stored in the start inhibitor module of your vehicle.
